Zazenkai, Saturday July 16

Saturday July 16, 2022
Zazenkai, A Day of Zen
Led by Valerie Forstman

Women in Zen: Valerie will take up Bodhidharma’s disciple,
Zongchi, for our July online day of Zen

Zongchi was the daughter of an Emperor of the Liang dynasty of 6th-century China, who converted to Buddhism when he took the throne. With her parents permission, Zongchi was ordained a nun at the age of 19 but soon became disillusioned with the aristocratic life of the convent, and left. She eventually found Bodhidharma, the First Patriarch of Zen, teaching under a tree and became his disciple and was one of four dharma heirs. A dharma heir completely understands their master’s teachings and becomes a “Zen master” in their own right.  Zongchi’s name is also spelled Ts’ung-ch’ih, by her title, Soji, and as Myoren, her nun name.

Join Valerie and the Mountain Cloud online community for a day dedicated to practice and an exploration of this prominent female Zen Master Zongchi. Give your mind and heart a day of repose; reconnect with the source of who you really are. For those who are new to the practice, a Zazenkai or Day of Zen is an opportunity to taste the fruits of extended silent sitting. Sitting with others online, following the schedule, receiving guidance—all offer support for taking your practice to a new level.

Those enrolled in our July 30 Days of Zen program are warmly invited to add a full day of practice to the month’s challenge.  If you are inclined, register for this day of practice. A Zazenkai is a chance to plunge into the heart of practice and find yourself at home.
