SUMMARY:Rohatsu Sesshin with Valerie & Henry (hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Rohatsu Sesshin\nco-led by Valerie Forstman and Henry Shukman \nMonday\, December 2 – Sunday 8\nThis is offered in-person & virtually   \nRegister to Attend Online\nWAIT-LIST ONLY – Apply to Attend In Person\nJoin us for this annual Rohatsu Sesshin. Valerie will be leading the retreat from Mountain Cloud’s zendo and the event will be hybrid\, with both part-time and full-time attendance options.  \nThe theme for this year’s Rohatsu is “Heart of Compassion: A deep dive into the heart of this life.” \nFor this week of Rohatsu we set aside our daily concerns\, our ordinary conventional social ties\, and release ourselves back into the origin point that lies at the heart of the great wisdom traditions. \nSesshin – finding the heart – is the practice that opened up Shakymuni Buddha to his true nature\, and it’s the well-tested practice that can open up the boundlessness at the core of each of our lives. We gather in stillness to let ourselves relax\, rest\, and release into the true source of all experience – the wisdom and compassion that is our true home. \nWe’ll explore the Heart Sutra as we go\, with help from some Zen koans\, as agents of nourishment and transformation as we sit together. \nExperience the unique opportunity of extended practice with support from: \n\nThe resounding silence and stillness of the age-old sesshin format\nThe deep container supported by Sanbozen Roshi’s Valerie Forstman and Henry Shukman\nDokusan (one-to-one interviews) conducted in person by Valerie and online by Sanbozen Teacher Carolyn Seburn\nOptional hybrid breakout discussions with Assistant Sanbozen Teachers Scott Thornton\, Shana Smith\, and Carolyn Seburn\nQ&A with Valerie and Henry\nGuided movement with Mountain Cloud members and yoga masters\, Rebecca Hooper and Luke Weinstein\n\n∞ \nSesshin is a term used in Zen to refer to an intensive period of meditation practice\, typically lasting several days to a week or more. During sesshin\, practitioners engage in extended periods of sitting meditation (zazen)\, walking meditation (kinhin)\, chanting\, and other forms of Zen practice under the guidance of a teacher. Sesshin is often held in a retreat setting\, with participants observing noble silence and following a strict schedule of meditation sessions interspersed with short breaks for rest and meals. The purpose of sesshin is to deepen one’s meditation practice\, cultivate mindfulness\, and gain insight into the nature of reality. \n∞ \nSample Retreat Schedule (Mountain Time)\nDaily Schedule (Tuesday – Saturday)\n \nMorning \n\n6:00-7:30am  Sitting\n7:30-9:30am : Breakfast\, samu (work practice)\, and rest\n\nMain Block \n\n9:30am-noon   Sitting and dharma talk (recorded and shared via email in the evening)\nNoon-1:30pm  Lunch and rest\n2:00-5:30pm   Movement\, Sitting and Q&A (recorded and shared via email in the evening)\n\nEvening Block \n\n5:30-7:00pm   Dinner\, rest\, personal time\n7:00-8:30pm    Sitting & Closing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n∞\nOnline or “At-Home” Attendance\nThis winter\, we are thrilled to offer a comprehensive online experience for those participating in the retreat from the comfort of their homes! Dana can be made through paypal: paypal.me/vforstman. \n∞ \nValerie Forstman is an Associate Zen Master of the SanboZen lineage and our Guiding Teacher here at Mountain Cloud. Her first teacher\, with whom she continues to work\, was Ruben Habito Roshi. Since 2003\, she has also trained under the guidance of Yamada Ryoun Roshi\, current abbot of SanboZen. \nValerie came to Mountain Cloud with a shared vision of the core of the Zen path\, a way of coming home to who we truly are. In keeping with the SanboZen tradition\, this path or ‘way’ may include koan training\, “just sitting” practice\, or simple breath awareness practice\, all of which funnel into what it means to undergo the immense change of heart implied by the term “awakening.” What a joy and what a rich process it can be\, not just to taste this\, but to embody it and live it out in lives of compassionate service. \nAs Guiding Teacher\, Valerie is responsible for he quality and integrity of Zen offerings as Mountain Cloud. She offers dokusan to over 50 students a week\, runs our sesshin and zazenkai\, Alongside her guiding work at Mountain Cloud\, Valerie leads sesshin (intensive Zen retreats) annually at two Zen centers in Germany. \nSarah Giffin is the Executive Director of Mountain Cloud Zen Center. In this role she drives the execution of our organization’s mission\, manages our team of staff\, leads fundraising and other new initiatives. She brings to the role over a decade of experience facilitating and administering non-profit programs in the field of youth and adult education. Sarah first came to the center as a Zen student in 2017 to pilot the first iteration of our Residency program. Since then\, she took on a variety of roles including Facilities Manager\, Curriculum Specialist\, Online Program Manager\, Board Director\, and all the while\, sangha member. She is a Master Degree candidate at George Washington University in Organizational Leadership and Learning. \n∞ \nDharma Talk often referred to as a “teisho” in Zen Buddhism\, is a discourse or lecture given by a teacher to convey teachings on Buddhist philosophy\, principles\, and practice. During a Dharma talk\, the teacher may explore various aspects of Buddhist doctrine\, share insights from personal experience\, and offer guidance to the audience on how to apply these teachings in their lives. The purpose is to deepen understanding\, inspire contemplation\, and support the development of mindfulness and wisdom among the practitioners.

SUMMARY:The Precepts Study Group
DESCRIPTION:The Precepts Study Group\nSaturday\, December 14   |  9-10:15 AM MST (US & Canada)\nSemi-monthly on Saturdays ~ Meets Online  \nFor the first session\, read the book’s Introduction! \nThis group is for members and friends of members who want to explore how the Ten Precepts might inform\, empower\, and enliven our practice\, both on the cushion and off. We will be reading Opening to Oneness by Nancy Mujo Baker. Our Curriculum Coordinator & Campus Coordinator\, Kieran Mead-Ward\, will convene the meetings\, and we anticipate guest appearances by the author herself! Please consider giving dana to our teachers It’s a Buddhist tradition to offer a financial gratitude gift to the teacher. You can use these payment methods: paypal: nancyebaker@earthlink.net \n∞ \nIn Opening to Oneness\, Zen teacher Nancy Baker offers a detailed path of practice for Zen students planning to take the precepts and for anyone\, Buddhist or non-Buddhist\, interested in deepening their personal study of ethical living. She reveals that there are three levels of each precept: a literal level (don’t kill\, not even a bug)\, a relative level that takes moral ambiguity into account (what if it’s a malaria-spreading mosquito?)\, and an ultimate level—the paradoxical level of nonduality\, in which the precepts are naturally expressed from a state of oneness. \nFull of nuance\, intelligence\, and compassion\, the first half of the book addresses the ten grave precepts mostly from the relative level\, including instructions for how to practice these precepts individually and in pairs or groups. The second half of the book takes a deep dive into looking at the precepts from the ultimate perspective\, largely through an exploration of the writings of Dogen\, the thirteenth-century religious genius who founded the Soto Zen school. \n\n\n\n\n∞ \nNancy Mujo Baker Roshi is a distinguished Zen teacher and writer\, renowned as the founding teacher of the No Traces Sangha within the lineage of Maezumi Roshi’s White Plum Sangha. Recognized as a Dharma successor to Bernie Glassman\, she holds the esteemed position of being among the first fully empowered lay Soto Zen teachers. With over forty years of teaching experience\, she served as a Professor Emerita of Philosophy at Sarah Lawrence College. Currently residing in New York City\, she brings a wealth of wisdom and insight to her teachings. We had the privilege of featuring one of her essays\, “Sitting No-where\, Leaving no Traces\,” on our website previously. You can read it by clicking here.
