SUMMARY:Dharma Talk: Valerie Forstman
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 9th  |  5:30–7:00 PM\nMeditation begins at 5:30 pm MT\, followed by the Dharma Talk (teisho) at 6:00 pm MT. \nYou are invited to join us for an evening with Valerie Forstman at Mountain Cloud Zen Center’s zendo\, where she will be leading the Dharma Talk. This hybrid event is free and registration is not required. Please arrive five to ten minutes ahead of the scheduled time. \nTo participate online\, please click on the zoom link below.\n \nsit.mountaincloud.org\nPasscode: mountain22 \nTrouble logging on to our online sits? Click here for guidance. Need help with time zone conversion? Use the World Time Buddy . \nIf you miss a dharma talk\, you can find it on our YouTube channel within one to two weeks. \nKindly consider contributing dana (a traditional Buddhist offering) to express financial gratitude to our visiting teacher. Dana can be made through paypal: paypal.me/vforstman. \n∞ \nValerie Forstman is an Associate Zen Master of the SanboZen lineage and our Guiding Teacher here at Mountain Cloud. Her first teacher\, with whom she continues to work\, was Ruben Habito Roshi. Since 2003\, she has also trained under the guidance of Yamada Ryoun Roshi\, current abbot of SanboZen. \nValerie came to Mountain Cloud with a shared vision of the core of the Zen path\, a way of coming home to who we truly are. In keeping with the SanboZen tradition\, this path or ‘way’ may include koan training\, “just sitting” practice\, or simple breath awareness practice\, all of which funnel into what it means to undergo the immense change of heart implied by the term “awakening.” What a joy and what a rich process it can be\, not just to taste this\, but to embody it and live it out in lives of compassionate service. \nAs Guiding Teacher\, Valerie is responsible for he quality and integrity of Zen offerings as Mountain Cloud. She offers dokusan to over 50 students a week\, runs our sesshin and zazenkai\, Alongside her guiding work at Mountain Cloud\, Valerie leads sesshin (intensive Zen retreats) annually at two Zen centers in Germany. \n∞ \nDharma Talk often referred to as a “teisho” in Zen Buddhism\, is a discourse or lecture given by a teacher to convey teachings on Buddhist philosophy\, principles\, and practice. During a Dharma talk\, the teacher may explore various aspects of Buddhist doctrine\, share insights from personal experience\, and offer guidance to the audience on how to apply these teachings in their lives. The purpose is to deepen understanding\, inspire contemplation\, and support the development of mindfulness and wisdom among the practitioners.

SUMMARY:Turtles EcoDharma Group
DESCRIPTION:New members welcome!\nThe EcoDharma group\, known as the Turtles\, convenes on the FIRST & THIRD Thursday of the month at 7pm MST following teisho. \n  \nMeetings take place both in person at Mountain Cloud and online via: \nsit.mountaincloud.org\nPasscode: mountain22 \nDuring these gatherings\, we’ll delve into the question: “How can we\, as Zen practitioners\, respond to the current ecological crises with open hearts?” Our discussion will include analysis of recent environmental events\, relevant media\, and our personal reflections on these issues. \n∞ \nSince 2023\, members of Mountain Cloud have been engaging in deep dialogue and learning about key environmental and ecological issues and how we respond. We gather as sangha to support each other in our commitment to the healing of the world and welfare of all beings. We learn from and inspire one another through reading\, discussion\, and sharing our personal interests and actions. As we acknowledge and become more aware of the magnitude of our planetary crisis\, we aspire to transform climate grief and confusion into energy and direction for wise\, compassionate action. \nAs one Turtle member put it: “I am coming to see that this work is about facing the unknown. My feelings of powerlessness and guilt are changing as I see\, honor\, and am inspired by other’s actions. I realize that they are like seeds germinating in my life.” \nAll Mountain Cloud members are most welcome to join.  For more information including the current reading\, contact Doug White\, doug2white@gmail.com

SUMMARY:The Precepts Study Group
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 11th   |  9:00 – 10:15 AM Mountain Time (US & Canada)\nSemi-monthly on Saturdays ~ Meets Online  \nFor the first session\, read the book’s Introduction! \nThis group is for members and friends of members who want to explore how the Ten Precepts might inform\, empower\, and enliven our practice\, both on the cushion and off. We will be reading Opening to Oneness by Nancy Mujo Baker. Our Curriculum Coordinator & Campus Coordinator\, Kieran Mead-Ward\, will convene the meetings\, and we anticipate guest appearances by the author herself! \nTo join us\, use the following Zoom link: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84830985606?pwd=bmKCAkzyhSXkHmWKtXYfMJz3gWAvin.1\nMeeting ID: 848 3098 5606\nPasscode: sangha \nPlease consider giving dana to our teachers It’s a Buddhist tradition to offer a financial gratitude gift to the teacher. You can use these payment methods: paypal: nancyebaker@earthlink.net \n∞ \nIn Opening to Oneness\, Zen teacher Nancy Baker offers a detailed path of practice for Zen students planning to take the precepts and for anyone\, Buddhist or non-Buddhist\, interested in deepening their personal study of ethical living. She reveals that there are three levels of each precept: a literal level (don’t kill\, not even a bug)\, a relative level that takes moral ambiguity into account (what if it’s a malaria-spreading mosquito?)\, and an ultimate level—the paradoxical level of nonduality\, in which the precepts are naturally expressed from a state of oneness. \nFull of nuance\, intelligence\, and compassion\, the first half of the book addresses the ten grave precepts mostly from the relative level\, including instructions for how to practice these precepts individually and in pairs or groups. The second half of the book takes a deep dive into looking at the precepts from the ultimate perspective\, largely through an exploration of the writings of Dogen\, the thirteenth-century religious genius who founded the Soto Zen school. \n\n\n\n\n∞ \nNancy Mujo Baker Roshi is a distinguished Zen teacher and writer\, renowned as the founding teacher of the No Traces Sangha within the lineage of Maezumi Roshi’s White Plum Sangha. Recognized as a Dharma successor to Bernie Glassman\, she holds the esteemed position of being among the first fully empowered lay Soto Zen teachers. With over forty years of teaching experience\, she served as a Professor Emerita of Philosophy at Sarah Lawrence College. Currently residing in New York City\, she brings a wealth of wisdom and insight to her teachings. We had the privilege of featuring one of her essays\, “Sitting No-where\, Leaving no Traces\,” on our website previously. You can read it by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Zazenkai: Beginning with a Pang
DESCRIPTION:Beginning with a Pang \nSaturday\, January 18th\, 2025\nThis course is offered in-person & virtually\nRegister Here \nOur first Zazenkai of the new year falls just before the concurrence of Martin Luther King Day and the presidential inauguration – prime time to set aside a day for shared practice. \nWhat happens when\, resting in the breath\, we allow the discursive mind to settle and allow the silence of things just as they are to pervade? What might emerge as the solvent of silence divests us of anything extra? What spaciousness is this that opens our hearts and disposes us to taste and see the wisdom and compassion of who we truly are? \nCan it be a spaciousness – a boundless reality – that excludes nothing? \nIn her talk\, Valerie will invite us to keep company with Pang Lingzhao\, daughter of Layman Pang\, who tradition remembers as often surpassing her father in their teaching exchanges. The Pang family chose to sink their significant wealth in a river (or according to some accounts\, to give it away) – but the riches of the dharma sustained them to the full. Born in the final year of the devastating An Lushan rebellion\, Lingzhao’s clarity and humor shine. Her life calls to mind the refrain\, “Let freedom ring.” \nIf you plan to attend in person\, please bring your own lunch; breakfast basics and tea will be provided. To attend in person\, please read and follow our COVID-19 Protocols for MCZC’s current policies on masks\, vaccinations\, and testing. \n∞ \nZazenkai is a term used in Zen Buddhism to refer to a day of intensive meditation practice. The word “Zazenkai” is of Japanese origin\, where “za” means sitting\, and “zenkai” means gathering. During a Zazenkai\, participants engage in periods of sitting meditation (zazen)\, walking meditation (kinhin)\, and may also include chanting\, dharma talks\, and other activities related to Zen practice. Zazenkais provide an opportunity for practitioners to deepen their meditation experience and strengthen their commitment to the path of Zen Buddhism. These events can vary in length\, with some lasting a full day\, as mentioned in your previous messages. \n∞ \nSchedule (Mountain Time)\n6:00-8:00am: Sitting\n8:45: Movement\n9:00am-12:00pm: Sitting and a Dharma talk\n12:00pm-1:00pm: Lunch\n1:00-3:30pm: Sitting and Q&A \n* Note for online participants — the retreat Zoom room will open shortly before 6:00 AM MT. For those who prefer not to or cannot join the 6:00 AM MT start time\, you have the option to begin your day with movement at 8:45 AM MT or sitting and a short introduction at 9:00 AM. The dharma talk is scheduled for around 10:00 AM MT. The dharma talk will be recorded and made available on our YouTube Channel within two weeks. \n∞ \nParticipation Fee \nThe cost for the day is $50 or an amount you can reasonably afford. Your support ensures that we can continue to offer free events and low-cost retreats. \nRegister Here \n∞ \nZazenkai/Daylong dates in 2025 \n\nJanuary 18\nFebruary 15\nMay 3\nJune 28\nJuly 19\nNovember 15\n\n
