Dharmatalk: Excess of Happiness

January 19, 2021

“… as an affirmation of the absolute unity of all …”

absolute unity of all shukman

“… How can there be suffering if there is no one who suffers? …”

Description: In this further exploration of the Heart Sutra from the 2019 Winter Sesshin, we look at the section that says: “No ignorance, and therefore no ending of ignorance; no old age and death, and no ending of old age and death.” This line corresponds to the 12 Links of Dependent Origination, an important teaching in Buddhism. The sutra asserts “no” again and again to all 12 links, not as a nihilistic denial of existence, but as an affirmation of the absolute unity of all.
