10 Days of Koans: An Introductory Intensive

Friday September 16 – Sunday September 25
with Optional 4 Day Koan Retreat September 29-October 2nd

Please note that this course has begun, but it’s not too late to join us! All materials will be made available to you. Once you have registered, please be patient with receiving your course materials, as we can only process registrants once a day. Thank you!

As Henry tells us,

Koans are not riddles.
They are not talking points for discussion.
They are not devices to be used for psychodrama.
Nor are they checklists to be knocked off in some deluded idea of progress….

They are opportunities to change the way we experience our very lives. They grant us the chance to change our experience from something shallow, two-dimensional, paper-dry, to something of limitless depth and unbounded dimension, and infinite potential.

Over the course of this 10 day intensive, you won’t just learn about koans, you’ll build a foundation for bringing them into your practice. You will be guided through a progressive sequence of pre-recorded videos, experiential activities, and live workshops.

This course is for you if you are curious about koans, eager to bring them into your practice, or just want to stoke the fires of your meditation.

Over this 10-Day Course, you will receive:
  • 4 Talks from Henry Shukman

  • 4 Guided Meditations from Henry Shukman

  • 3 Live Workshops with Assistant Sanbo Zen Teacher Shana Smith (scheduled to suit most time zones, and recorded for those who can’t attend live).

  • Daily encouragement, resources and opportunities to meditate with your cohort

  • Optional: Receive a 15% discount for the subsequent 4-day retreat Beyond Words – the Lived Experience of Koans on September 29-October 2nd. First-time retreatants are welcome!  Click here for details.

How it Works

The course schedule is designed to help you build momentum and dive deep into the material and engage directly with a teacher, while remaining flexible to your everyday schedule.

Each day of the program, you will receive something new– a talk from Henry, a guided meditation that builds on that talk, or the opportunity to workshop your questions and insights in a live 1-hour session with Assistant Sanbo Zen Teacher, Shana Smith.

Talks, Guided Meditations, and Live Workshops will be hosted via our online forum, and all recordings will be shared so that you can view content on your own schedule.
