Dharma Talk: Breakthroughs Part 2 with Henry Shukman

Thursday, November 21st | 5:30–7:00 PM
Meditation begins at 5:30 pm MT, followed by the Dharma Talk (teisho) at 6:00 pm MT.
You are invited to join us for an evening with Henry Shukman at Mountain Cloud Zen Center’s zendo, where he will be leading our Dharma Talk. This hybrid event is free and registration is not required. Please arrive five to ten minutes ahead of the scheduled time.
At this time when many of us may be feeling daunted and uncertain, we gather in the zendo to tap into our shared deeper nature that meditation can open up, drawing sustenance and new perspectives from it.
We will be exploring breakthrough experiences — sudden shifts in how we understand and experience this life. They can show up in many forms, and in many areas, both personal and collective. Zen’s history is full of stories of sudden awakenings — moments when practitioners found they had broken out of familiar ways of perceiving and understanding their lives, into new ways of experiencing time, space, a profound sense of belonging, and of participating in the life of this world and all its beings.
This evening we will be exploring different ways that shifts in experience can show up, why they can be so helpful, how to encourage and invite them, and also how to integrate them into new paths of living.

Henry Shukman is Spiritual Director Emeritus at Mountain Cloud Zen Center. He joined the center as Guiding Teacher in 2010, bringing new fervor to the teaching at the center and fostering new programs. He then became Spiritual Director. Between 2010 and 2023, Henry has contributed greatly to the Mountain Cloud you see today.
He has trained with several Zen teachers, particularly the roshis Joan Rieck, John Gaynor, Ruben Habito and Yamada Ryoun Roshi, as well as with teachers and mentors in other traditions. Henry has received dharma transmission (inka shomei and sanmotsu) from Yamada Ryoun Roshi, Abbot of Sanbo Zen, and is a Shōshike (Authentic Zen Master) of the Sanbo Zen lineage of Kamakura, Japan. In addition, Henry is an award-winning author and poet. His struggles as a youth, combined with a spontaneous awakening experience at 19, paved the way for him to develop a well-rounded approach to spirituality and meditation, under the guidance of his teachers – one that includes both compassionate concern for the sufferings of the world and the great liberating power of awakening as its foundation. Henry is the founder and teacher of the Original Love Program, a comprehensive non-sectarian guide to meditation practice, and is the co-founder and teacher of the meditation app, The Way.

Dharma Talk often referred to as a “teisho” in Zen Buddhism, is a discourse or lecture given by a teacher to convey teachings on Buddhist philosophy, principles, and practice. During a Dharma talk, the teacher may explore various aspects of Buddhist doctrine, share insights from personal experience, and offer guidance to the audience on how to apply these teachings in their lives. The purpose is to deepen understanding, inspire contemplation, and support the development of mindfulness and wisdom among the practitioners.
