“A manifesto, a map, and a manual, this essential guide for spirituality in the twenty-first century replaces the concept of original sin with original love as the true foundation of our life.”

An increasing number of people today feel disconnected, disengaged, and lonely, while divisiveness is at an all time high. Many of us are seeking solace, for ourselves, loved ones and the wider world. Original Love is the secular spiritual handbook we need to ease our troubles.

Renowned mindfulness teacher Henry Shukman provides a way forward based on four “inns” of practice —Mindfulness, Support, Absorption, and Awakening. Together, they lead to deep and fulfilling meditation for practitioners at all levels. And it works! Shukman includes personal anecdotes and inspiring stories from his students that reveal how it has transformed their lives.”

About the Speakers

Henry Shukman is Spiritual Director Emeritus at Mountain Cloud Zen Center. He joined the center as Guiding Teacher in 2010, bringing new fervor to the teaching at the center and fostering new programs. He then became Spiritual Director, and between 2010 and 2023, has contributed greatly to the Mountain Cloud you see today.

He has trained with several Zen teachers, particularly the roshis Joan Rieck, John Gaynor, Ruben Habito and Yamada Ryoun Roshi, as well as with teachers and mentors in other traditions. Henry has received dharma transmission (inka shomei and sanmotsu) from Yamada Ryoun Roshi, Abbot of Sanbo Zen, and is a Shōshike (Authentic Zen Master) of the Sanbo Zen lineage of Kamakura, Japan.

In addition, Henry is an award-winning author and poet. His struggles as a youth, combined with a spontaneous awakening experience at 19, paved the way for him to develop a well-rounded approach to spirituality and meditation, under the guidance of his teachers – one that includes both compassionate concern for the sufferings of the world and the great liberating power of awakening as its foundation. Henry is the founder and teacher of the Original Love Program, a comprehensive non-sectarian guide to meditation practice, and is the cofounder and teacher of the meditation app, The Way.

A behavior coach, Certified Interfaith Spiritual Director, podcast host, and writer, Eric Zimmer is endlessly inspired by the quest for a greater understanding of how our minds work and how to intentionally create the lives we want to live.At the age of 24, Eric was homeless, addicted to heroin and facing long jail sentences. Eric works as a behavior coach and has done so for the past 20 years. He has coached hundreds of people from around the world on how to make significant life changes and create habits that serve them well in achieving the goals they’ve set for themselves.

In addition to his work as a behavior coach, he currently hosts the award-winning podcast, The One You Feed, based on an old parable about two wolves at battle within us. With over 600 episodes and over 30 million downloads, the show features conversations with experts across many fields of study about how to create a life that has less suffering and more fulfillment and meaning. Guests on the show include scientists, authors, researchers, teachers, thought leaders, spiritual gurus, and public figures and all offer practical, actionable wisdom that listeners can readily apply to their daily lives in order to act their way into a better experience of living.
