Live in the Cloud Podcast Recording with David Hinton

in the Cloud with David Hinton: LIVE
Friday, November 20th | 6:30 – 8:00pm MT | Doors at 5:30pm
In-person and online; RSVP required
Join us for a special live recording of Path(less), the conversation series portion of Mountain Cloud’s in the Cloud podcast, as host Grant Goulet sits down with renowned poet and translator David Hinton.
Widely celebrated for his master translations of ancient Chinese philosophical and poetic classics—including the Tao Te Ching, Chuang Tzu, and China Root—David Hinton has spent decades mapping the deep intersections between Taoism, Ch’an (Zen) Buddhism, and the wild ecology of human consciousness.
In this conversation, they’ll discuss David’s understanding of Ch’an (Zen) in its original form in ancient China. As a way into that original Ch’an, they will talk about David’s recent books: The Selected Poems of Yang Wan-li and Orient: Two Walks at the Edge of the Human, as well as his forthcoming Wheel-Rim River. They’ll also discuss David’s own initial and enduring curiosities that carried him along his unique path through ancient Chinese poetry and philosophy.

David Hinton has published numerous books of poetry and essays, and many translations of ancient Chinese poetry and philosophy that create contemporary works of compelling literary power, while also conveying the actual texture and density of the originals. Hinton uses translation as a way to make contemporary poetry and philosophy freed of Western assumptions about the nature of things, and his books are all informed by an abiding interest in deep ecological thinking, in reweaving consciousness and landscape/Cosmos. This work has earned wide acclaim and many national awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and both of the major awards given for poetry translation in the United States: the Landon Translation Award (Academy of American Poets) and the PEN American Translation Award. Most recently, Hinton received a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Grant Goulet is the host of Mountain Cloud Zen Center’s in the Cloud podcast series, Path(less). Grant’s interested in the supportive tripod of spiritual, philosophical, and scientific disciplines, with particular emphasis on metaphysics and consciousness. After several years of self-directed inquiry and contemplative practices, Grant was drawn to Zen through the writings and talks of Alan Watts, and has since deepened his appreciation for the tradition as the “the sword so sharp it cuts two into one.” Prior to taking up residency at Mountain Cloud, Grant utilized his PhD in Biomedical Engineering as faculty in academia, and executive leader in industry.
Off the cushion, Grant can be found running wild in the mountains around Santa Fe, taking pictures, writing down his philosophical musings, and being of service to the broader community in a variety of small ways.
