Ben’s book presents an integrated path of personal and social and healing liberation. This commentary on seminal Yogacara Buddhist teachings, which were formative in Tibetan and East Asian Buddhism harmonizes early Buddhist psychology with the Mahayana emphasis on collective liberation. The book is focused on daily living for contemporary people, and includes material from Theravada, Tibetan, Zen, and Yogacara traditions as well as many examples from contemporary movements for social and climate justice.

Though it’s been a few years, Ben Connelly has spoken at Mountain Cloud about previous books he’s written. His talks and ideas are thoughtful and engaging – accessible to a broad audience and profoundly applicable to contemporary practitioners.

Ben is based at the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center and has taught at about sixty Buddhist practice centers across the US.  He teaches secular mindfulness in many contexts including training for police, therapists, and addiction recovery groups. He also works with multi-faith groups focused on intersectional liberation, racial justice, and climate justice. Ben’s previous books include Inside the Grass Hut, Mindfulness and Intimacy, and Inside Vasubandhu’s Yogacara (Wisdom Publications).

…shows us how to understand and embody the mystery of Vasubandhu’s teachings without getting lost in esoterica and spiritual bypassing.
~Pamela Ayo Yetunde, Th.D. Co-editor, Black and Buddhist

Beautifully written, it fuses lucid explanations of often difficult Yogacara ideas with attention to everyday concerns in a way that can help all of us apply Buddhist wisdom to the lives we live in the twenty-first century.
